- Loosen the upper part of the filter casing, and remove the complete piston rod unit (1)
from the filter casing.
- Remove activated carbon cartridge (2). Open lid (3) of the activacted carbon cartridge (snap
closure).
- Pour activated carbon granules in the outer ring of the cartridge. Note: There is more
granulate in the package than will fit into the cartridge to provide for
accidental spilling while the cartridge is filled.
Close lid, and replace activated carbon cartridge into the filter housing.
Reassemble complete piston rod unit (1) (turn in a clockwise direction).
- Once used the activated carbon granulate should be replaced every 6 months.
To keep track set the red dial to the month the replacement is due. To better move
the dial use a coin.
Note: When activated carbon granulate is used for the first time black carbon dust
will be washed out and deposited on the ceramic filter. To prevent premature clogging of the
filter please clean the ceramic after approx 1/2 litre/pint every time activated carbon
granulate has been newly added!
2. Operation
- Immerse intake hose in untreated water.
- Hold filter vertically when starting to pump.
- After 10 to 20 brisk pumping actions, drinking water begins to flow from the
outlet at the lower end of the filter casing (7). Each time you use the Combi,
discard the first few pump strokes of water.
- PET drinking bottles (plastic water bottles) can be screwed directly onto the
filter outlet. Using the supplied bottle adapted (6), Sigg and Nalgene bottles
can also be attached.
- After use, drain any water remaining in the filter. Remove the ceramic element
and the activated carbon cartridge, then shake out the filter, and reassemble elements
(lubricate gaskets (7) with the Katadyn silicon lubricant when necessary).
3. Maintenance
Inspect the ceramic for cracks after cleaning, if you have dropped the filter or
if it has been exposed to freezing temperatures. During normal use the ceramic filter
may treat up to 50,000 litres (14,000 gallons) of water; the carbon granulate will
treat approx. 200 litres (60 gal).
3a) Cleaning and testing the ceramic filter element
Cleaning:
- As bacteria and particles of dirt become trapped on the surface of the ceramic,
pumping will require greater effort. When pumping becomes noticeably more
strenuous the ceramic filter must be cleaned at once. Never use force when pumping.
Note: The ceramic filter will trap all particles >= 0.2 micron. Even clear
water can cause your filter to clog due to invisible particles.
- Hold the adapter (6) to the filter element (8), turn the bayonet catch at the lower
end of the filter anti-clockwise as far as it will go and remove filter element (8).
Caution! The filter may be under pressure and unfiltered water may splash out when
the filter element is being removed.
- With the cleaning pad supplied, clean the ceramic surface until the original bright colour reappears.
Testing:
- After cleaning the ceramic filter element, check for minimum diameter (41 mm/1.6") using
the integral red measuring gauge (9). If the measuring gauge is able to slide over
the ceramic element at any point without being forced, the diameter is below the minimum
required, and the filter element must be replaced.
- If a ceramic filter element is cracked or below the minimum diameter, disinfection
can no longer be guaranteed. Do not continue to use such an element. It must be replaced
immediately.
- Rinse out the filter casing and remove any coarse dirt.
- Before reassembling the ceramic filter element, lubricate the gaskets on the
ceramic element (8) and the piston rod unit (1) when needed.
- Press the filter element firmly into the casing, and turn the bayonet catch
clockwise as far as it will go using adapter (6) (match markings on housing
and element).
3b) Cleaning and testing the activated carbon cartridge
- Lift the activated carbon cartridge from the filter, and remove any coarse dirt particles
from the lid of the cartridge by swilling or rinsing in water. If the membrane is
completely clogged clean it very carefully with a tooth brush or
the green cleaning pad.
Note: Do not apply pressure as the membrane may tear.
- If the water still has un unpleasant taste/smell when activated carbon is used, the
activated carbon must be replaced (see assembly instructions).
- Change activated carbon at least every 6 months, regardless of the litre output.
- Re-insert the activated carbon cartridge in the filter.
3c) Sanitation
Activated carbon, re-fill package and ceramic element can be discarded with
ordinary household waste, or once dismantled (plastic and metal), in the
corresponding raw material container.
4. Storing the Combi
If the Katadyn Combi is not in use, allow air to dry out the ceramic element and activated
carbon cartridge thoroughly. Depending on air temperature and humidity it may take
from one day to two weeks to dry out completely. Before reassembly add
lubricant to the o-rings. By storing the Combi dry and lubricated it is ready whenever
you need it even if you have not used it for many years.

6. Safety Instructions
The Katadyn Combi will not desalinate water. Do not back flush, microwave, boil the filter
or pump any other liquid other than water.
The use of activated carbon is only effective if the water is contaminated with chemicals
or extremely unpleasant flavourings. When filtering at altitudes above the agricultural
zone it is recommended to remove the carbon filter cartridge as it adds unnecessary weight.
Caution! Keep activated carbon away from children.
