KATADYN MINICARBON FILTER

Operating Instructions

Your Katadyn Mini Carbon reduces chemical impurities and unpleasant tastes and traps even chlorine-resistant giardia and cryptosporidium cysts. The heart of your Mini Carbon is a fine-pored carbon block. Activated carbon reduces chlorine, iodine and other chemicals such as pesticides, and herbicides, and restores the natural taste of water.

Use only water with a low dirt content. Otherwise, the activated carbon filter element may become blocked.

The activated carbon alone cannot offer adequate protection against bacteria. To remove bacteria, the filter can be converted to a ceramic system by replacing filter element, item no. 20656, with item no. 20547.

1. Operation
  1. Immerse intake hose (3) in untreated water.
  2. Hold the filter vertically; move the pump handle (4) up and down to draw in and pump water through the filter.

  1. After about 10 to 20 pump actions, drinking water flows from the outlet.
  2. When using for the first time: pump water through the filter element (1) for a few minutes until the emerging water has a clear appearance.

2. Activated carbon element safety checks

If there is still an unpleasant taste/smell to water after it has passed through the activated carbon, the activated carbon filter element (1) must be changed. As a rule, one activated carbon filter element will treat up to 500 litres of water with average biological contamination.

Change the activated carbon filter at least once every six months, regardless of the quantity of water filtered through.

Warning! The activated carbon element is fragile. Do not submit to shock or crush loading.

3. What to do when the filter is not in use

If your Katadyn Mini Carbon will not be needed for longer than two days from when it was last used, the filter element should be allowed to dry outside of its housing in the ambient air.
  • Pump the filter until it is empty.
  • Remove the filter element from the housing.
  • Drain any residual water from the housing.
  • Shake the filter, with the outlet pointing downwards (residual water).
Allow the activated carbon element to dry thoroughly in the air.

Do not dry on hot surfaces, in ovens or microwave appliances.
  • Re-assemble the dry filter.
4. Malfunctions

If your Katadyn Mini Carbon is not supplying water after 20 pump actions, please check whether:
  • the unit was held vertically during pumping
  • the intake strainer (5) is blocked
  • the ball valves are moving freely; audible clicking when the empty housing is shaken...if not, tap gently on the housing
  • the intake hose (3) has a kink

If water is leaking from the housing seal (2):
  • inspect the seal for proper positioning and possible damage...replace if necessary

The action of the pump plunger is heavy, and/or water is leaking during pumping:
  • unscrew and remove the pump plunger (4) and, if necessary, clean with a rag, and lightly grease the seal with silicone

5. Filter element replacement

Ask you Katadyn dealer for the Katadyn Mini Carbon replacement element set, item no. 20656 (1) (double pack). It contains 2 carbon elements and a seal (2) for the housing.
