Combi Filter Purpose and Action

The Katadyn Combi turns bacterially contaminated water into wonderfully fresh, healthy drinking water with a natural taste.
It does this without having to boil the water or adding chemical additives.
The Katadyn Combi incorporates two operating modes: 0.2 micron ceramic, or activated carbon/ceramic combined.
1st Operating Mode:
In the first mode, the Katadyn ceramic element is used to treat turbid and contaminated water from lakes, rivers and streams removing all bacteria and protozoa producing safe, potable drinking water.
The fined pore microfiltration offered by the Katadyn ceramic filter element has proven to be the most reliable step in water safety technology. Even the smallest known bacteria cannot penetrate the Katadyn ceramic filter, because the average pore size of the ceramic is a mere 0.2 micron
The organisms causing the following diseases can thus be removed from the water: dysentery, typhoid fever, cholera, colibacillosis, amoebic an bacterial dysentery, bilharciosis, giardia, etc.

2nd Operating Mode:
In the second operating mode, water is filtered through activated carbon granulate. Inserting the activated carbon cartridge will reduce chemicals including chlorine and iodine, as well as, potentially hazardous elements such as herbicides, and pesticides. The carbon granulate also eliminated unpleasant odors and returns the water to its natural taste.
The Katadyn Combi does not remove 99.9% of viruses and does not remove dissolved minerals or chemicals. Therefore, sea water or brackish water is not desalinated. Nor is water softened by removal of the hardness, minerals, calcium, and magnesium, normally considered beneficial in water for drinking and food preparation.
The outside surface of the ceramic filter element may temporarily plug up by the particulate matter in water. The exterior of the ceramic is then wiped or brushed to restore the normal flow rate.
